The capital city and largest of the state is Des Moines. The city was named for the Des Moines River which passes through. The river was named by the French as an abbreviation for the ‘River of the Moingwena’ whose name came from the Illinois Indian sub-tribe. Iowa’s climate is humid continental across the whole state.
