The state is ranked 15th in terms of its size, with a land area of 82,277 square miles (213,096 km2). It borders Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Missouri. It is the 33rd most populated state with of 2.76 million people.
The largest city is Wichita, in south central Kansas. This is an important center for aviation and is known as “Air Capital of the World” because of the six major aircraft manufacturing companies located here.
Kansas actually experiences three categories of climate including humid continental in the east, semi-arid climate in the west, and a humid subtropical climate in the south.
The state nickname is “The Sunflower State” in recognition of the high production of sunflowers here. Its motto is shared with NASA, the Latin “Per aspera ad Astra”, meaning “Through hardships to the stars”.
Kansas joined the Union on January 29, 1861, making it the 34th state to do so.
