It is the 10th largest state with a land area of 97,818 square miles (253,348 km2) though has the lowest population of all 50 states, at just 515,004 people. This makes it the second least densely populated state, at 5.26 people per square mile.
The capital and largest city is Cheyenne, located in the far south east of the state. The city was named after one of the most famous Great Plains tribes, the Cheyenne nation.
The climate in Wyoming is classified as being semi-arid continental. Summers are warm to hot, though obviously temperatures decrease as elevation increases. Winters are cold but are warmed by the arrival of the Chinooks which are warm winds travelling across the Rockies. The average July high in Cheyenne is 82F (27.7C) and the average January low is 15F (-9.4C).
There are several state nicknames: “Cowboy State” and “Equality State” and hence the state motto is “Equal Rights”.
Wyoming joined the Union on July 10, 1890, making it the 44th state.
